About the competition

Canoe Marathon

The “Canoe Marathon” is a type of canoe competition. It’s a paddle-sport where participants row a kayak or canoe. It is a long-distance race in which all boats start at the same time and compete for finishing positions. Participation is open to a relatively wide age range, regardless of physical fitness or ability. In addition, a part of the course has a portage area (50-100m along the land) where athletes will pass in front of the spectators with their canoes, creating a sense of unity throughout the venue. In Europe, long-distance races are held in a variety of locations and are very popular. In this tournament, participants will do 1 to 7 laps of a course that’s about 3km long.

SUP

SUP is an abbreviation for "Stand Up Paddleboard", a water sport that originated in Hawaii. As the name implies, participants stand on the board and paddle along the surface of the water. Since it is easy for beginners to get into, its popularity has increased rapidly in the last few years. In the same way that athletics events range from the 100m dash up to the marathon, SUP races also have long distances that require endurance, technical races that employ buoys installed on the course which rely on skill to maneuver, plus there are various sprint events that include technical races and a pure speed event on a straight course. During this tournament, there will be long distance races covering two to four laps of a course that’s about 3 km per lap.

Dragon Boat

The Dragon Boat is not only a competitive sport, but also a traditional festival, so participants and spectators get to take part of both sport and tradition. Since it is more important to match the breathing of the whole team rather than simply relying on power and speed, participants can take part regardless of physique. Dragon boats come in a variety of lengths and crew-sizes. At the tournament in Kyotango City, small traditional dragon boats that have been used in local competitions for over thirty years with a capacity of 10 participants (8 rowers, 1 taiko drummer, and 1 steering crew member) will compete at a distance of 500m.
